The SRL show in Phoenix will not happen on Oct 28, due to actions taken by the Fire Departments in SF and Phoenix.
Earlier this week the Phoenix Fire Dept stated that they would deny an SRL application for a permit to stage the Ultraviolence Show in Downtown Phoenix. According to off the record accounts from a source within the Phoenix City Government sympathetic to SRL, the primary reason for this was a contact between the Phoenix Fire Marshalls office and the San Francisco Fire Marshalls office during which the SFFD advised the Phx FD against allowing the event to occur. The Phoenix Fire Department suggested that the show be moved outside of their jurisdiction.
The Phoenix Promoter, David Therrien (XE.RO), has now undertaken a lengthy appeal process to request variances of the Fire Code proposed by the Phoenix FD which may result in the ban against the show being lifted. This process involves a complex safety assessment of each and every SRL machine and cannot possibly be completed in time for the October 28th date. David has found two other locations in the Phoenix area that lie outside of Phoenix city limits and the jurisdiction on the Phoenix Fire Department, although the Downtown location is still very much the preferred site, hence the delay while we pursue the variances of the Fire Code.
The primary code requirement that we must win a variance for is a rule that states that there must be a 300' separation between the audience and pyrotechnic devices. This variance might be appropriate for a large aerial fireworks show, but it is highly inappropriate for an SRL event. The SRL audience demands close proximity to the devices and that is what SRL will deliver.
SRL and David Therrien regret any inconvenience this delay may have caused to those planning to attend the Ultraviolence event. Please bear in mind that unlike a baseball game or a rock show SRL events have been known to inspire unwarranted fear in the minds of regulatory agencies which can lead to unpredictable issues such as this delay. This in spite of the fact that no injuries or significant property damage can be attributed to any SRL event whatsoever. Please stay tuned and be patient, SRL and XE.RO will prevail.
